In international trade, many buyers will first ask suppliers to provide samples in order to confirm whether the product quality, process and details meet the requirements.
However, many people believe that just sending a few samples as samples for making clothes hangers should be a very low-cost process. In fact, for professional hanger manufacturers, the process of making samples is far from being as simple as imagined.
The sample is not as simple as "making a few coat hangers".
For custom-made hangers, even if the customer only requests 9 samples, the actual quantity we produce is often 14 or more.
This is because the samples were not produced randomly by hand, but were manufactured according to the production process specified in the formal order.
From the preparation of raw materials, equipment debugging, to production, quality inspection, and packaging, every step must be carried out in accordance with normal production standards. Sometimes, in order to produce a batch of samples, we even need to suspend the normal production line to schedule production.
Therefore, the sample is essentially a "small-scale production", and its unit cost is much higher than that of mass production.
The value of the sample is not merely the product itself.
Many customers focus on the samples themselves, but tend to overlook the human resources, equipment and time costs that the suppliers have invested behind the scenes.
For a professional supplier of clothes hangers, each sample production represents:
l Arrange production plan;
l Prepare corresponding raw materials;
l Test equipment;
l Produce according to the standard of the formal order;
l Conduct quality inspection;
l Pack independently and arrange for shipment.
These investments will not be reduced simply because of the small quantity. On the contrary, due to the inability to achieve large-scale production, the costs will be higher.
Why do we usually produce samples for free, but require customers to bear the shipping costs?
We are willing to cover the cost of sample production, while the customer will bear the transportation expenses.
This is not done to save a certain amount of shipping cost. Instead, it is hoped that both parties can invest certain costs in the cooperation and jointly promote the smooth progress of the project.
Compared to the cost of sample production, international shipping fees usually account for only a small portion. However, when customers are willing to bear the shipping costs, it often indicates that they are willing to seriously proceed with this project and also respect the time and resources that the supplier has invested in making the samples.
In our opinion, this is a fair and healthy way of cooperation.
The sample actually reflects the attitude of both parties towards the cooperation.
After years of experience in foreign trade, we have found that a customer's attitude towards samples often reflects the possibility of future cooperation.
Customers who are willing to bear the reasonable shipping costs for samples usually place greater emphasis on communication efficiency and are more likely to establish long-term cooperative relationships.
On the contrary, if the client decides to abandon the project after the samples have been produced, due to their unwillingness to bear the shipping costs, then during future cooperation, there is a higher likelihood of problems such as repeated budget adjustments, decision delays, and unclear responsibilities.
Of course, this does not mean that all customers must pay for the samples. Instead, it indicates that whether they are willing to share the most basic costs of the cooperation is itself a sign of their commitment to the collaboration.
We will also actively pursue valuable cooperation opportunities.
For large and powerful brands, chain retailers, or customers with potential for long-term cooperation, we are also willing to take on more investment on our own initiative.
If, after a comprehensive assessment, we believe that there is a promising prospect for cooperation between the two parties, or if the customer's new products or designs have high market value, we might even cover the costs of sample production and transportation, treating it as a worthy business opportunity worth investing in.
Because we believe that truly valuable cooperation requires both parties to establish long-term trust together, rather than focusing solely on a single transaction at hand.
The sample is the first step of cooperation and also the beginning of trust.
In our opinion, the samples are never just a few pieces of coat hangers.
It represents the professional capabilities of the suppliers and also reflects the purchasing company's emphasis on cooperation.
Each sample production is an important step for both parties to build trust and verify their professional capabilities.
Therefore, we always treat every sample with great care, and we also expect every partner to cherish this investment as well.
Because truly stable and long-lasting cooperation usually begins with a sample that is treated seriously.
